After getting some feedback from some more friends and listening to a few more songs, I realized that I had missed a few great songs in the vein of great break up/love lost songs. So I’ve decided to post another entry revolving around the subject.
Pantera – This Love
I was introduced to Pantera through this song, so for that reason it holds a special place in my heart. One of the masters of heavy, sludge metal Pantera quickly became one of my favorite metal bands. I particularly like this song because it opens sounding like it was some sort of ballad type song, then when it hits the chorus it all goes to hell.
Cake – I Will Survive
The Gloria Gaynor classic given new life by Cake. This is one of my favorite Cake songs because of the new spin they put on the song, John McCrea’s subdued almost monotone vocals, the heavy bass line, along with the classic Cake guitar sound make this a distinct favorite of mine even at times of happiness. It’s also a song of moving on, and saying you can make it without the other person in your life, especially since they weren’t the best thing for you anyway.
The Streets – Dry Your Eyes
I don’t think anyone has quite captured the emotions of the first moments of a break up quite like Mike Skinner does in “Dry Your Eyes”. A song off of his “A Grand Don’t Come For Free” album which is essentially a “a day in the life of” concept album. During the album he meets a girl, falls in love, and the second to last song on the album is her breaking up with him. The bargaining, the desperation, the realization that it’s over and that he just needs to walk away.
Warren Zevon – El Amor De Mi Vida
Another Warren Zevon song from The Wind. I’ve been spinning this one a lot lately and came across this song and the translation of the chorus:
Tu eres el amor de mi vida (You are the love of my life)
Si solo te pudiera encontrar (If only I could find you)
Con todo el corazon te diria (With all my heart I would tell you)
Tu eres mi amor de verdad (you are my true love)Tu eres mi amor (You are my love)
Tu eres mi amor (You are my love)
Tu eres mi amor de verdad (You are my true love)
The Vandals – My Girlfriends Dead
I’ll leave you with this light hearted song about dealing with a break up. This is one of my favorite songs by The Vandals, it was off of the first album by them I ever got. I’ve performed a version of this song as a monologue before, and even told the guitarist of the band that before and he got really excited about it.
Honestly there have been times lately where I’ve wanted to respond to the question “So where’s your girlfriend?” With “She’s dead.” Just to see what the reactions would be.
